Macintoshes and the RP614 Router Gateway

Topic 1. What do I need to connect to the RP614 Router Gateway?

You need a Macintosh computer running MacOS 8.6, 9.x, or 10.x. (Netgear products are not supported for versions of MacOS before 8.6.) You can use the RP614 with an eMac, iBook, iMac, PowerBook, PowerMac, or PowerPC as long as they are running one of these versions of MacOS.
You also need a few Ethernet cables to make the connections between the router to your modem for internet connection and from the router to your computers or peripherals.

Topic 2. How do I prevent my Network configuration from being lost when I restart my computer?

When making configuration changes for MacOS it is best to use Configurations (MacOS 8.x or 9. x) or Network Location (MacOS 10. x) settings instead of just changing settings for each category (TCP/IP, AppleTalk, AirPort, etc.).

If you just make changes to your settings, they may be lost when you restart your computer unless you have saved them in a Configuration or Network Location.

To create a Configuration in MacOS 8.x or 9.x:

1.       Open AppleTalk (or TCP/IP) from the Apple Menu in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.

2.       From the pull-down File menu select the Configurations option.

3.       Choose New Configuration.

4.       Type in a name for your new configuration (Netgear Router).

5.       Make your changes to the AppleTalk (or TCP/IP) settings.

6.       When you close AppleTalk (or TCP/IP) choose Save Changes.

Whenever you make Configuration changes for settings in MacOS 8.x or 9.x, open Configurations from the File menu or by pressing Command-K. Saving your changes in Configurations means that they will not be lost when you reboot your computer.

To create a Network Location in MacOS 10.x:

1.       Open the Apple Menu by clicking on the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.

2.       Select System Preferences. The System Preferences window displays.

3.       From the System Preferences window click Network under Internet & Network. The Network settings window displays.

4.       Click the Lock icon (if necessary) in the lower left-hand corner of the window to unlock the Network window so you can make changes. (You may be asked to type in your User Name and Password.)

5.       Click the pull-down menu next to Location at the top of the Network window.

6.       Select the New Location option.

7.       Type in a name for your new Location and click OK.

8.       Make your changes to the TCP/IP, AppleTalk, and AirPort settings.

9.       Click the Lock icon in the lower left-hand corner to prevent further changes. The Apply configuration changes? Window displays.

10.    Click Apply to apply the configuration changes for the newly-created Location.

11.    Close the Network window.

Topic 3. How do I connect a Macintosh to the RP614 Router Gateway?

MacOS 8.6, 9.x, and 10.x

1.       Set up your system for installation.

2.       First make sure your ISP connection is working. Try testing your computer with the ISP directly to make sure you can successfully make a connection to the internet.

3.       Connect your DSL or cable modem to the Netgear Router.

4.       Log on as Administrator (if required for your system to make configuration changes).

5.       Quit all other applications.

It's best when configuring MacOS 8.6 and 9.x to use the Configurations settings for AppleTalk and TCP/IP because they should then retain their settings when you reboot. (Use Network Locations to save your settings changes in Mac OS 10.x.) If you just change the settings but don't use a Configuration or Network Location to save your settings changes, you may lose those changes when you restart your computer.

1.       Insert the Netgear RP614 CD-ROM and open the Index.htm file in a browser window.

2.       Click the Install Assistant button.
Follow the instructions from the CD-ROM for setting up your hardware connections and software configuration.

3.       On the page Gather Configuration Information for your Working Connection to the Internet scroll down to the section on Activating TCP/IP.

4.       Click the hyperlink for your Mac OS.

5.       Follow the instructions to make TCP/IP active.

6.       On the page for Configure the Computer the Work with the Router

7.       Follow the instructions to set TCP/IP to use the Ethernet connection and DHCP.

8.       Continue following the instructions on the Netgear Install Assistant CD-ROM including turning off and on the DSL or Cable Modem and the Router.

9.       Restart your computer when asked.

10.    When your computer has rebooted click through the Install Assistant to the Configure the Router and Test the Connection page.

11.    Click the SETTINGS TOOL button. A window displays asking for the login and password to the router.

12.    Type in “admin” for the login and “password” for the password. You should then see the Router Basic Settings page display.

13.    Scroll down the screen and make any settings you need for your computer and your ISP.

14.    Click the Apply button and then click Test. You should see the Netgear success page display.

You should now be able to connect to the RP614 Router Gateway and connect to the Internet.

If you are having problems connecting a Macintosh running MacOS 8.6 or 9.x to the RP6114 Router Gateway:

Open the Control Panels from the Apple menu in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.

NOTE: With some ISPs you may see a message stating that the system is not connected to the internet, even if it is. If you see this message first try launching a browser to test your connection before making further changes.

If you are having problems connecting a Macintosh running MacOS 10.x to the RP6114 Router Gateway:

1.       Set up the Netgear Router Network Location for this computer using these settings

2.       Open the Apple Menu by clicking on the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.

3.       Select System Preferences. The System Preferences window displays.

4.       From the System Preferences window click Network under Internet & Network. The Network settings window displays.
