I’m trying to use Microsoft ® XP / MSN Messengers Voice/File Transfer/Video service with my router, and I can not get it working, what can I do?

Microsoft has identified a possible bug between UPnP (Universal Plug and Play), which XP / MSN Messenger uses to communicate, and NAT (Network Address Translation).  Linksys and Microsoft are both working to resolve this problem and hope to have a solution shortly.

You can work around this problem in the short term by doing the following:

  1. Click on the Start button then click on the Run option.
  2. When the "Run" window opens, input ncpa.cpl then click on the OK button.
  3. When the “Internet Gateway Status” Window appears click on the Properties button
  4. Once the Network Connections area appears, please look for the Internet Gateway area (If there is no "Internet Gateway" area please see Answer ID 286).Once you locate it double click on the icon below it.
  5. Once “Internet Gateway Properties” appears click on the Settings button.
  6. Once the “Advanced Settings” window appears, un-check every option under “Services”.
  7. Click OK on the “Advanced Settings” window, and click OK again on the “Internet Gateway Properties” window.
  8. After you complete these steps may be able to use Voice/File Transfer/Video portions of XP / MSN messenger.
