SSID (Service Set IDentifier) is a unique name shared among all wireless devices of a wireless network. The SSID must be identical for each wireless device in the wireless network and it is case-sensitive.
To increase Network Security, most Wireless Access Points and Wireless Routers are capable of  disabling the SSID from being broadcasted into the open air.  With the SSID Broadcast enabled, someone could obtain your SSID with simple Site Survey software and possibly gain access to your Wireless network.

Note: Before disabling SSID Broadcast on the Wireless Range Expander, please make sure that you have configured the correct SSID for the Range Expander to use. If not, the Range Expander will not be able to connect to the wireless network.


Disabling the WRE54G’s SSID Broadcast:

  1. Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
  2. Type in WRE54G’s IP Address in the “Address” field (http://192.168.1.240 is the default IP) and click GO or hit the [Enter] key.
  3. A “User Name” and “Password” prompt will appear.  Leave the “User Name” blank and input the WRE54G’s password (admin is the default password) into the “Password” field then click the OK button or hit the [Enter] key.


  4. When the WRE54G’s “Basic Setup” page appears, click the drop-down menu in the “SSID Broadcast” field.

  5. Select Disable to disable SSID broadcast.
  6. Click on Save Settings to apply changes.
