How do I set
up AOL Broadband with a Linksys Router?
Note: This document provides
instructions for setting up the Router using firmware version 1.43 or above to
work with AOL Broadband via Cable. This Router’s AOL Parental
Controls feature is available for AOL customers in the US only.
1. Before continuing please verify
that your AOL Cable modem is connected to the WAN Port of the router, and
the
first computer you will be setting up is connected to one of the number ports
on the router (For example, port 2).
2. Go to your desktop and double click
on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in Windows XP).
3. When "Internet Explorer"
opens, type http://192.168.1.1 into the "Address" bar and click on Go or [Enter].
4. The "Enter Network
Password" window will appear.
5. Skip the user name and type admin
(admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK.
6. Under “WAN Connection Type”
the default option for Obtain an IP automatically should be set.
If it is not, please set it to such, and click Apply.
7. When you arrive at the “Setup”
page, look for the Security tab and click on it. ( As seen in Figure 1)

8. After the “Security” area
opens, scroll to the bottom of the page and look for the option, “AOL
Parental Controls”,
once you find it, toggle the option from “Disable” to Enable.

Note: The screen above (Figure 2) may
appear differently depending on the product and firmware in the Router.
9. A pop-up window will appear,
as seen in (Figure 3), simply click OK.

10. After you click OK on the warning window, click Apply on
the “Security” page.
11. Once you’ve completed these steps shut down your computer, then pull
the power cable from the back of your router, then pull the power cable from
your cable modem. Wait for 30 seconds, then plug the power cable into
your cable modem. Wait for about a minute, then plug the power cord into
the router, then start your computer again. Once you do this, you should
be able to use AOL with your router.
